WTN: Riesling and GV

by Dale Williams » Sat Jul 09, 2011 11:04 pm

Tonight was trip prep, but Betsy still found time to make chiclen schnitzel over herb salad, and Indian glazed carrots. Dinner on the patio, and 2 friends joined us for tutorials on watering and Lucy care, and shared in the wine:

2004 Nigl "Privat" Gruner Veltliner
Big, almost lush, but with firm acidic backbone. Sweet peas, Fuji apple, white pepper, great length. No hurry, but this is nice. A-

1996 Schloss Schonborn Hochheimer Daubhaus Riesling Spatlese
Petrol, apples (maybe hint of browning apples), just a bit of sugar, a hint of mineral but this isn't too exciting.. B-/C+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Hi Dale -

Thank you for the interesting notes. The Nigl definitely sounds like a nice wine.

As for Schönborn, I would tend to agree with David's assessment, although the oldest wine of theirs that I have had was a 1997.
