ChocoVine!

by Robin Garr » Fri Jun 24, 2011 5:23 pm

NOT a TN. I spotted this at Walgreen's and recoiled in horror, thinking it looks like a bottle of Yoo-Hoo with red wine in it. Some non-geek friends, though, say they actually like it, like a lighter version of Bailey's. Website at http://www.chocovine.com - has anyone actually tried this product, and if so, will you admit it?

Robin, if you search your own forum  you'll find one short thread on the kitchen side. I should add that I've seen the stuff in stores here and have not been tempted.

Ditto on having seen it, but not been tempted.

Yeah, I wrote about this stuff a couple of years ago. There's people out there that really like it (and some on this board...). I never wanted to try it.

I do like red wine with chocolate, but not in it.

Kids drink is my understanding. My daughter distributes it. I have not tasted it even though it's been free.

Seen it but would never be tempted. Don't like Bailey's or chocolate milk, so either with red wine even if I approved of such things just isn't something I'd ever go for.

I tried this in a wine shop. It was better than I expected but not good enough to want to buy it. If I want Bailey's, I'll buy Bailey's.

I remember when my rep told me about this and I thought it was going to be like something called Deco Port which is chocolate flavored port style wine, which I thought was awful. I made them bring the Chocovine by to taste before I would let it in. It really was not all that bad for that category, say compared to O'Mara's. It seems to sell fairly well so there is a customer base for it.

The nearest establishment to us that sells wine is about 10 miles up the road. They have some very nice stuff on the shelf from a wide variety of sources. I stopped by today to pick up some pork chops and brew, and saw that they were having a wine tasting on Saturday. They were offering this one, a Pinot Grigio, and an entry level Chianti. I asked why they pouring plonk. They said they were trying to get non-wine drinkers interested. I opined that that may work in some cases, but thought by pouring good stuff, so people could see what wine should taste like, would capture more converts. They disagreed. Sigh!

Carl, the trouble with your logic is that it is too good. The other problem is that the retailer is thinking that if he pours a $20-25 bottle he is going to scare off a lot of people. Then He thinks that he can't eat the loss on the off chance of getting a new customer or two. He is wrong, but he doesn't know that, and will refuse to listen to logic like yours.
