WTN: Two In The Hamptons...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Jun 24, 2011 12:33 pm

We had these two wines last Sat night w/ family:
1. Qupe Marsanne SantaYnezVlly (80% Marsanne from Ibarra-Young vnyd/20% Roussanne from Stolpman vnyd; 13.0%) 2001: Med.dark gold color; strong waxy/beeswax/toasted hazelnuts/smokey quite fragrant/honeyed very complex/old Rhone nose; rather tart stony/appley/honeyed/waxy/toasted hazelnuts bit smokey fairly complex flavor; very long waxy/beeswax/toasted hazelnuts/smokey/honeyed lovely complex finish; a classic old Qupe Marsanne that should go another 5-10 yrs.

2. Dom. Gourt de Mautens AC: CdR/Rasteau (MeBaD; 14%) JeromeBressy/Vigneron/Rasteau 1998: Dark color w/ some bricking; some smokey/pungent rather toasty/oak/charred/burnt rather tired/old red/dried-out nose w/ hardly any fruit; rather tired/dried-out/tannic hot/alcoholic/fumey strong burnt/toasty/oak no fruit flavor; med.long hot/alcoholic/fumey rather tannic/astringent/dried-out strong charred/oak finish w/ little fruit or complexity; a dried-out/tired mess of tannin and oak; gone/gone.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. TheGourt: This was, I think, the first vintage of TheGourt. 100% Grenache. It got big scores out of Monktown for its oak & extraction level and labeled a 20 yr wine. I last had one about 5 yrs ago and thought it was already pretty shakey. This one was pretty much dead & gone. So much for power & extraction.

2. We made a visit to nearby ChanningDaughters wnry earlier in the afternoon. My focus was to be what ChristopherTracey is doing w/ Friulian varieties and styles. Alas, he & wife had twin daughters just a few days afore and could not make it.
Overall, I liked Christophers wines quite a bit. They had very attractive aromatics. On the palate, they were pretty wines but seemed a bit dilute. OTOH, the orange wines I liked even more. They didn't have the "strange/weird factor" so many of those wines show and had a lot more punch on the palate. Didn't try many of the reds, though.

Thanks for the headsup,Mark..sounds like what I am looking for, will put in on " the list" to try...Will probably head out to Union Springs to taste at Hearts and Hands later this Summer but usually go by way of Skaneateles and Auburn on our way to Cayuga.

Channing Daughters: Have enjoyed their wines, especially the Sauvignon Blanc from the Mudd Vineyard (actually on the North Fork). Wanted to like the Ramato, one of their orange wines made from Pinot Gris. Alas, I didn't care for it, nor did any of the several other experienced wine drinkers who tried it (and the non wine geeks were even less charitable). It does get good tasting notes from those that appreciate the style, but I guess I'm just not one of those people.

Tom - Thank you for the notes. The one Gourt du Moutens Rasteau that I have tried also struck me as being too ripe, and I have seen similar comments from other people on this producer's wines.

As one who does like orange wines, I tried the Channing Daughters 07 Meditazione last year, and was impressed. Haven't tried any of their other wines yet, but am intrigued by their other field blends.
