WTN: Bordeaux, Trimbach, Cadillac

Notes from last Wednesday night dinner at Je Suis Gourmand.

Trimbach Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre Gewurztraminer 1998 - Typical roses and lychee nose. Just enough sweetness to give it an extra nudge in complexity. Very nicely balanced, soft wine with a powerful, long finish. Perfect drinking now. Beautiful wine and a great partner for the onion soup.

Demoiselle de Sociando Mallet 1996 - Slightly musty nose. Soft but very fruity. Good balance. An hour of airing seemed to give it more body. Perhaps a little too refined to stand up to the hearty food. I can't see this improving further. Good for drinking now.

Chateau Siran 2000 - Dark, young, very ripe, sweet, concentrated. Plummy and meaty. Finishes very long. Not really integrated yet. Has a long life ahead of it and can only get better. Excellent stuff.

Clos St. Anne Cadillac 1999 - With dessert. Very muted nose. Simple, sweet, grapey. Grape skins texture. Perhaps past its prime. Short and watery finish. A letdown after all the previous bottles.

Jay thanx for the note on the Siran. I recently went to a 2000 Bordeaux off-line and took one of my Kirwans. It was sooooo closed. Looks like the Siran would have been a better choice. The best wine at that tasting was the Grand-Puy-Lacoste, which has been, IMHO, a very nice wine fromt he get-go.

I love the '98 Trimbach SdR. I don't often love Gewurz, but that one does it for me.

Funny. I also don't tend to like Gew, but I've said the same things about the '99! I guess it can't be said too often: Trimbach rocks!

The Siran is drinking OK now but will take maybe another 3 or 4 years to round it out.
