Are natural corks making a comeback?

by Tim York » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:21 am

If you believe this rather superficial article from the Uk's Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/ ... f-comments , they are. The main source is a cork industry spokesman  .

I wonder if in years to come, we'll see marketing folk from a cork industry background as the 'best of the best'. The pinnacle of their profession. They're nothing if not active, albeit presumably well-funded with it.

I question the premise of this article; Wine Business Monthly's 2010 closure report shows screwcaps at about 5 times their sales since 2004, bark cork as roughly constant, and technical corks improving their share too.

I think the cork producers see the writing on the wall. They can't really talk about technical excellence with a primitive technology, so they talk about how many people are still using bark corks. This is a very conservative business but things are changing, even in the old world.
