WTN: Viognier Redux

  • 2005 Joseph Filippi Viognier - USA, California, South Coast, Cucamonga Valley (10/13/2006)
We are always on the look out for a nice Viognier. This is produced by the only winery remaining in the Cucamonga Valley, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Before Prohibition, there was many wineries in the area. Now, Filippi is the only remaining producer, and it is surrounded by cookie cutter house that continue to encroach. Amazingly, the winery is planting new vineyards in the area.

We are members of their wine club, at least partly to support the winery and to help it survive and maintain some of the history of the region intact. Over the last few years, the wine quality level has increased dramatically, which has been an added bonus. That may be due in part to collaboration of Marc Lurton from Bordeaux. But whatever the explanation, many of the wines have gotten seriously better. Over the past few months, I have brought Filippi wines to a number of off-lines. After the usual joking about a Cucamonga wine is over, most have found what was in the bottle to be quite good. Ok.. on to this wine..

Amazingly floral on the nose. Something reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. Medium body, oily texture, lots of tropical fruit and balanced acid and not a hint of RS. This is lovely for sipping and was very nice with pot stickers too. If you think you don't like Viognier, this might change your mind. I'm guessing this is only available from the winery website. About $21. (91 pts.)

Filippi?? Cucamonga Vlly??? Have you NO PRIDE!!! :-)
I had a Filippi Reserve Cab a few months ago and was pretty impressed by it; though thought it rather overpriced. But that Cucamonga terroir comes thru loud and clear.
That's one of the sad parts about flying into Ontario Airport. You can look out the window and see these bare fields w/ a regular pattern of dots across them...all abandoned vnyds.
