Going to sherry country

by Dave Erickson » Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:57 pm

I'm planning a visit to Seville and Sanlucar de Barrameda in September. I'm hoping for recommendations about bodegas to visit. Restaurant recs would be icing on the cake. Poking around the intertubes has yielded lots of information on Seville; Sanlucar, not so much. Help? Thanks!

Cheers,

No reccos from me, but a couple of links, the first of it that may be useful, the second amusing for Tom's co-presenter Michelle McManus who is refreshingly honest in her appraisal (sadly so rarely seen on telly)

Michelle is quite a character, not a big red wine drinker either. She also sings, has a lovely voice.

Yes, she's delightful.

I'll look for the Jeffs book. I have, and often consult, his "Wines of Spain" from the Beazley series.

Anybody been to Sanlúcar de Barrameda?

Never been, though I wouldn't even consider going without reading that damn book. Just thinking about it makes me thirsty. :D

Dave, I have been there, and done that, but it was so LONG ago that I dare not give impressions or recommendations. I remember staying in Sanucar a block off the beach for 500 pesetas per day for two rooms, and that included 2 meals per day. I visited several Bodegas in Jerez, and there were still wine barrels that were owned by Queen Isabella. At that time there was not a lot of English spoken, and my Spanish was rudimentary. Hidalgo is a name I recall for Manzinilla from Sanlucar, great wine! Tio Pepe Fino was the top wine of Jerez at that time. Of course that was 40 years ago. I envy you your trip.
