A really nice Riesling

2002 Theo Minges Gleisweiler Holle Riesling Spätlese
Got this for a song, had low expectations... Wow. Really good riesling. There's something 2001-esque about this wine, high praise in my book. Despite a crumbly cork, this spatlese is on the young side of its development. There's some golden notes in the nose with some zephrys of smoke. The fruit is good, all lime with some honeyed hints too (botrytis?), and then the killer acidity kicks in giving this its 2001-like balance. Very refreshing with a pitch-perfect weight to make this ideal as a summer sipper. Nothing profound, just a lovely sweet'n'sour riesling. It's hard to call a 2002 a throwback vintage (given that it was only 8.5 years ago), but that's what this is. Seems hard to find delicate Germans wines like this these days.... 90 pts.

Minges is one of the overlooked gems of the Theise portfolio. Not much has changed at Minges since that 2002, except a further uptick in quality.
