I made a quick stop at the local Meijer to pick up something for dinner earlier in the week. I happened onto a "manager special" cart which contained various and sundry closeout items at very low prices. The top shelf included about 30 bottles of wine which were marked "$5 per bottle". Most of it was Yellowtail type of fare, but I decided to scan through it anyway.
In the middle of the stash was a bottle of 2006 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay! I grabbed it and carefully scanned the remaining inventory for more. No luck. Then I went up to the wine area to see if they had any available at regular prices. They did not have any Newton wines on the shelves at all. So I tracked down a worker and asked if there might be more of the wine in the back. She didn't know, but tracked down the beverage manager who told me they never carry Newton wines at that store, and he had recieved that one by accident. Then he asked me if $5 was too much for the wine! I explained that the unfiltered Newton Chards are usually in the $40 range and that I was more than happy to pay the $5. He seemed quite stunned.
Right place, right time.
