2008 Dönnhoff Riesling QbA

by Mark Lipton » Mon Jun 06, 2011 10:58 pm

To celebrate my birthday tonight* (age redacted) Jean picked up some Thai food and we opened:

2008 Dönnhoff Riesling "Estate" (Nahe)
nose: white peaches, minerals, a modest dose of petrol
palate: slightly off-dry, bracingly acidic, fairly intense fruit

There may very well be better QbAs on the market than Dönnhoff's, but if so I've yet to taste them. Really great with the moo ping and pad makuer pork in our dinner.

* Entirely coincidentally, Jean gave me Terry Theise's book as a present right before dinner.

p.s. When removing this wine from Cellartracker, I noted that the Wiki on Dönnhoff references David Bueker, though they seem to have consulted Joe Dressner for the spelling of his family name :D

Happy Birthday Mark (and Kate)!

Good drinking. The Donnhoff QbA is an annual buy for me. The only QbAs that seem to regularly please me as much are the Max. Grunhausers and Scharzhofs (Egon Muller). Oh, and maybe Willi Schaefer. Leitz Dragonstone and Dr Loosen L are usually good value, but not quite on same level. But I've learned not to think of QbA as lesser. Bueker*? Benegal?

*wait, so you see David's name misspelled in a wiki, and leave it? :)

The Donnhoff QBA is also an annual purchase in our house and we often pair it with Thai food..First time I had the 2008 was at Lotus of Siam in Vegas with my daughter Samanatha who is a big riesling fan.

Fixed!

It's only slightly worth noting that there is another individual on the web who refers to me with the alternate spelling due to it being more "correct" as a Germanic form. That's likely where the Wiki notation came from.

I have few doubts about that, David, as I couldn't quite picture Dressner as the author of that wiki article. As Dale mentions, I should have fixed it myself: I'm just not that wiki-attuned yet, I'm afraid. Sorry!

Not a problem Mark. I actually added some more info, so it was worth stopping in to check it out.
