WTN: Beyerskloof Pinotage 2009

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Jun 03, 2011 8:29 am

WO Stellenbosch

Dark red in the glass.

Barnyard, light medicinal/band-aid notes, leather, mushroom, smoke on the nose.

Medium weight, quite tangy acidity, cherry, currants, lightly drying, spicy, charred, smoky, fairly rich.

Mouthwatering, earthy on the finish.

I found that this example of Pinotage wasn't as strong on the brett notes as some can be. Would have liked the wine much more if it had been able to dial back the high acidity a few notches.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian),

As you know, this wine (the white label) is made in amazing quantities (for Saf & for Pinotage).

I thought the 2008 was delighful and shared a bottle on its own with a visiting journo in Stellenbosch (I rarely drink red on its own).

I thought the 2009 white label was variable. I'm interested to see what the 2010 will be like

Many thanks for the note Bruce. Beyerskloof Pinotage has not made an appearance in Ontario probably for at least 5 or more years. Can't wait to give it a try once again.
