WTN: 1992 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

by Paul Winalski » Tue May 31, 2011 8:45 pm

I opened this for my family's Memorial Day barbecue.

This is a magnificent wine. It is everything that a mature, top-notch Napa cabernet sauvignon ought to be. Beautiful red-purple color with a brick-red rim. Magnificent, complex aromas of red fruits, especially blackcurrants. Rich black fruit flavors that one can get lost in. A finish that lasts forever. Seamless fruit and structure. No rough edges. Just pure enjoyment. This is why Chateau Montelena has been, and remains, one of the premiers crus of California. You can't ask for anything more from a wine.

Oh, if you insist on keeping it longer, it'll probably be this good for another decade. There's no hurry.

Triple Curly.

I haven't had this vintage, but the Montelena Estate Cabs I've tasted as far back as the 1978 have been outstanding. They are not always very cheap, but they do perform. I'll keep my eyes peeled for this vintage.
Cheers, Jim
