WTN: Match made in heaven (Kruger Rumpf Riesling & Steak)

by David M. Bueker » Sun May 29, 2011 8:25 pm

ok...ok...Vietnamise marinated steak with mint and chilies..food preparation by Thor Iverson and random wine selection by me.

2009 Kruger-Rumpf Binger Scharlachberg Riesling Spätlese (Germany, Rheinhessen)
Decidedly sweet, but with the sweetness and saltiness of the steak it was a great counterpoint. Then the at the table condiments came into play. With the addition of hot chilies and mint leaves the match went from great to sublime. Something in the wine just picked up on the mint, and the sweetness in the wine had the exact cooling effect that was needed for the intensity of the chilies. Forget the specific aromas and flavors, as this was all about the way the wine and food came together as one.

Who says you can't have white wine with steak?!?!

I don't know, who?

Although I'm guessing this wine was a lot thicker and more substantial in the mouth than many red wines.

That said, mint also seems like a lovely flavor note to play off German riesling.

Glad the pairing worked for you. I would never have thought of trying it. I like the mint pairing with riesling idea. I may have to try that some time.
