Corton Charlie at Grocery Outlet - believe it

by Jim Vandegriff » Sun May 29, 2011 1:41 am

Spotted today at my local Grocery Outlet store(a west coast USA grocery discounter) was a shocker. A 2006 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from the negotiant Morey-Blanc (associated with Pierre Morey) was on sale for $99.99. They also had a Meursault Boucheres premier cru, also the 2006 vintage from the same negotiant for $64.99. Of more interest to my pocket book was the Meursault 1er cru, Clos Richemont monopole from Henri Darnat from the 2005 vintage. I think this was $16.99. I thought about the 2006 Chateau La Louviere (Pessac Leognan) for $18.99 as well. I normally do not associate Grocery Outlet with these types of wines, but I thought I'd give you all a heads up if they are of interest. I did end up with a 2009 Oregon Pinot Noir from Evergreen Vineyards for $5.99 which stated 13.5% alc. I'd love to hear if anyone has had these wines or wines from this negotiant house.

Haven't had the wines, Jim, nor have I ever seen anything of that price/caliber at the northest westest Grocery Outlet in the chain. Has me wondering if the stores have an order list and some individual voice in what they get--IOW, if I were to get with the Bev manager, could I personally influence what he/she gets in the store? Hmm....
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

The individual managers do, Jenise. Some are more aggressive than others. We have one here in the Portland area that can sometimes be interesting---unfortunately, they don't have much interest in those Frawnch wines.

Pierre Morey is former manager of Domaine Leflaive. The wines of his own estate (Domaine Pierre Morey) are excellent and those from Morey Blanc, his négociant business, are almost as good. Those prices do not look too bad; the Corton Charlie lies at the lower end of what I would expect to pay here from a reputable producer. My main doubt would be the storage conditions at a grocery.

Thanks, Tim, for the information. These wines have just come into the grocery. I don't know about their provenance, but I'd love to try the Corton. All the best, Jim

Go for it!! I have had the opportunity to buy wines like this (or even better bargains) and been reluctant, only to regret my timid approach later. You should be able to take the wine back if it is bad, but you cannot buy more at those prices. Wines end up in unusual places sometimes due to the vagaries of the distribution channels, don't ask questions, just do your "cellar-tracker" homework.
