WTN: Minges Froschkönig Riesling 2009

2009 Theo Minges ‚Froschkönig‘ Riesling Spätlese Trocken –Pfalz, Germany 13,0%

This is absolutely lovely wine. Granny Smith Apple (a Riesling flavor none too common down here), bosc pear, aloe, lime, sea breeze, and sweet lees. Enchanting fragrance of verbenen and chamomile. The ’09 acidity, tamed further by long lees contact (and I’ll be damned if this didn’t go through malo) is noticeably soft and almost seems new after a slew of 2010s. It is so delicate and whispery and echoey(?!) for Spätlese, but with potential energy seething under the surface. Superb.

Cheers,
Bill

I got the lowdown on this wine while I was at the VDP tasting last week. Only 5 barrels were made, 3 ended up trocken, 2 sweet and no one was allowed to taste it for 18 months (not even Theo himself.) It just sat around on its Gross-lees and did its thing. No additives, no filtering, no temp control. they tasted it, loved it, and bottled it. Nice!

Cheers,
Bill
