WTN: 2006 Leone de Castris "Maiana" Red

by Brian K Miller » Tue May 24, 2011 6:40 pm

90% Negroamaro, 10% Malvasia nera.

Yum. What a nice hearty red quaffer. Plenty of tannins. A hint of "good" funkyness. Some oak vanilla but not too obtrusive. Bright red cherry fruit with a herbal note, red plums and plum skins and a nice acidic kick. A very nice bitter note on the finish that I loved.

These guys have been around for 350 years, and they are no tiny artisinal producer (you can buy tee shirts and other tat on their website  ) but it seems pretty classic to me. Especially for like $10 or so! I actually liked this more than the expensive Sonoma cab we also sampled, which had huge, rich black fruit but tons and tons and tons of NEW OAK vanilla. :?

I need to drink more southern Italian wines!
