"I am not worthy of the vintage"...wine in Game of Thrones

by Jim Vandegriff » Mon May 23, 2011 6:00 pm

The new HBO series Game of Thrones has wine playing a central role in episode 7 (available now to HBO subscribers on hbogo.com) or on the air on Sunday May 29. Both the king, and the khalisi (sp) are profoundly affected by their encounters with wine, and in fact, a wine merchant plays a central role in the plot, and affects the future of relations between two kingdoms by his actions. One line I enjoyed, stated by the wine merchant, was "I am not worthy of the vintage." Kinda how I feel about 2008 in Oregon. Pity the poor wine merchant though. I have no connection to this show; just thought it fun to see wine play such a major role. Jim

TomHill followed that vintage from the very start.

(I'm watching Game of Thrones too. They're doing a pretty good job of it.)

I downloaded a sample of the book on Kindle. Kind of like it. Is it worth continuing?

Jon, I haven't read this series of books, but I have enjoyed others by George RR Martin. He is heavily involved in the HBO series. What I remember about his writing is that one can never be certain what will happen next. The series of books has a very good reputation. (I'm certainly enjoying the cable series). Jim

in general yes, but the latest book in the series has been years in the writing and people are beginning to wonder if it will ever come out. So if you don't mind possibly reading a half-written series then it's quite good.

The 5th book in the series, "A Dance With Dragons" is allegedly due out 7/12/2011 according to the Barnes and Noble website...Hopefully it will be released in July

All of a sudden the end of the world doesn't seem so unlikely...

End of the world by dragon fire, perhaps, although the poor wine merchant meets a different fate it seems.

Jon, I ordered copies of the first 4 books in the series yesterday. I noticed that actor Peter Dinklage who plays the wine loving character Tyrion Lanister in the tv show was nominated for an emmy for his work. Well deserved.
