WTN: 2009 "Pheasants Tears" Rkatseli (Georgia!)

This is an "orange wine" aged in beeswax-coated clay amphorae.

Nose of citrus, earth, hint of funk.

My mind played tricks on me, because the wine had a very distinct and noticeable citrus/orange flavor. A hinto of bitterness/oxidative note which complemented the citrus flavors. Medium mouthfeel with good acidity. Very enjoyable and completely unique.

What an interesting oddball. Where in the heck did you find that?

Brian,

If you liked Pheasants Tears, keep your eyes open for the Amfora wines made by Kabaj in Slovenia. They are a blend of rebula, malvasia and tocai fruiliano and the variation among vintages is stunning. Though, alas, pricier, they are stunning, stunning wines.

Thanks, Keith.

Janice: There is a quirky small wine shop in Berkeley called Vintages. It is located in a cool (literally cool...no central heating in winter, LOL) art decoish former pump station in the Gourmet Ghetto neightborhood (Vine Street off North Shattuck...near Chez Panisse) They always have interesting wine...and everything in the store is less than $25.

Yup...this is a neat/funky store that I always hit up. And the original Peet's right across the street.
