Las Vegas Wine Shops

I'm going to be in Vegas for 3 days and wonder if anyone has suggestions for wine shops to visit? Something near the Strip would be ideal.
Thanks,
Steve

If I recall, there is or at least was a decent wine shop in the Rio hotel/casino. They also had a wonderful and huge collection of Ch. d'Yquem on display. Since it's a little off the beaten path, I'd call the Rio before I went over there. Other than that, I've never had to buy a bottle outside of a restaurant.

Thanks Jon. I'll check out the Rio and give them a ring first. I'm hoping to bring home a few bottles not available via the LCBO in Ontario.

Forget bringing things home. Go to Lotus of Siam (off the strip) and drink from their list & eat excellent Thai food.

Shouldn't we mention that the strength of their wine list is in German wines & others that go with their type of food.

We had a terrific meal at LOS last Thursday. The wine list is amazing, but also almost overwhelming if you don't know your German, Austrian and Alsatian wines well. Bank, the somm, recommended two wines that were excellent. Don't be freaked out by the location if it's your first time there.

One of my favorites for lunch is the tapas bar called Cafe Ba Ba Reba. It is very Spanish and very good. Good wine by the glass selection and great tapas. Across from the Wynn on the main drag. Also for a meal I really like Mon Ami Gabi in "Paris". Seems quaint and small, but I think it is well disguised. Interestingly enough, both are owned by the same syndicate. If you happen to be staying in Mandelay Bay (or anywhere close) there are two of my favorites. "Lupo", a Wolfgang Puck restaurant is one of the best I've experienced, with reasonable prices, great service, and a good Italian wine list. For another great wine bar you only have to go a few steps to a very eclectic locale in the main arena , "Fleur" where you will find such treasurers as a Macon-Village and the Lucien-Albrecht Cremant Rose' by the glass and an exquisite array of small plates, very attractive. If you want the full treatment you can do the nearby "Aureole" restaurant, with their three story "wine fairy" retrieval system. Very extensive and very expensive list. They are all very interesting, just depends on what you are looking for. Let us know what you find.

Many thanks for all these ideas! We'll give some thought to the Thai. Richard - your Tapas suggestion will be easy to explore near the Wynn.I look forward to that and perhaps also Mon Ami Gabi in Paris. I also hear that the tapas restauarnt in the Cosmopolitan is tops.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve, do understand, this isn't just any Thai restaurant. It's the best in this country. It's so good it's the Mecca of Thai eating, and it's just an unassuming little joint in a strip mall. But if you enjoy Thai food, it's a must; it will be the restaurant you judge all others by.

Thanks for making that clear Jenise - I'm not sure I understood how heavy this place was but I'm with the program now! I've since gone to the website and had a look - very cool. I'll be checking it out for sure. Cheers,
Steve

The strip mall in which LOS is located, Jenise, is at a level below unassuming...no one in their right mind would just pull in and think there could be any restaurant of any quality. And, yes, a reservation is a must.

There is a Mexican restaurant there, too, which offers free dance lessons Thursday-Saturday. There were probably a 100 people kicking up their heels last Thursday. It was a hoot!

Jenise,
In its heyday, that honor went (by popular acclamation) to Arun's in Chicago. I've eaten there a number of times and it is/was quite special. Can you or anyone offer any comparison of the cooking at LOS to Arun's?

Mark,

A chef from Arun's started a place called Amarind's. I think it's the best Thai place in Chicago right now, although Spoon Thai is pretty good.

My wife and I are headed up to Piccolo Sogno tomorrow night for Italian.

I can't help but chuckle every time I pass the ice ring there. Hockey in Vegas, who would think?

I have never needed one when I was in Vegas but I have read about a good wine shop within walking distance of the strip. I will have to search another board or two to see if I can find you the name and street address.
