WTN: Aldiano Trebbiano D'Abruzzo 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sat May 14, 2011 7:53 pm

Cantina Tollo Aldiano
Abruzzo

An 85-15 per cent Trebbiano-Chardonnay blend.

Dark yellow in the glass.

Apple on the nose.

Medium weight, apple, perhaps a hint of peach, crisp, good acidity, with a large dirty-bitter streak.

A bitter finish.

An otherwise good wine, marred by the dirty-bitter streak.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

The 'dark yellow' observation makes me suspect a bad bottle. What kind of cork was it, sythetic or bark?

It was some sort of plastic cork.

Personally, I can't stand those plastic corks - hard to extract, and they can leave vinyl-like taint in the wine. Screwcaps are much better.

The solid plastic ones (rather than those with a core and an outside layer) can fail very quickly. I hate them.

They're also dreadful to remove from your corkscrew, once extracted. Once I had to use pliers, the fake solid plastic cork was on that tight!
