2000 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Rieslaner Spätlese
A remarkable wine on its own, but really something special given the context of the 2000 vintage. A powerhouse of tropical fruits; mango, nectarine, peaches and grapefruit seasoned with various spices and honeyed notes; still very youthful and fresh with plenty of acidity that keeps it really well balanced, precise and light, with enough sweetness to make it a lovely foil for some moderately spiced Caribbean food. Drinking very well now, and seems to have the stuffing, structure and balance to last a fair bit longer, unlike just about any other German wine I've had from 2000. Hans-Gunter Schwarz was a magician.

I think the extra-hardy nature of Rieslaner had a lot to do with the success of that wine.

Hi Salil -

Thank you for the interesting note. Always nice to hear of a successful 2000 from Germany.
