1998 Nigl Riesling Senftenberger Hochacker
The alcohol just shows through on this. My gosh it is hot. There's some developed, pine forest elements and some lingering citrus along with the expected minerality. The problem is that over the top is a ton of obvious alcohol. Not good.

The label said 13% (not an unusual level for Austrian Riesling), but it might as well have been 16.5%.

Hot, hot, hot and pine forest elements sounds like an awful combination. Yuck!

You may want to switch to Weingut Josef Högl (Spitz/Wachau)? It's the only Austrian winery that never disappointed me so far. Its wines are affordable, mature slowly and show nice minerality and fruit. The fairly inexpensive Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Ried Schön is a great choice in almost every vintage.

I'm not so much worried about Nigl. The '97s and '99s are maturing in a lovely way. I am not a fan of the '98 vintage, and had been wary of this bottle - turns out for good reason.

I will look out for Hogl though. Thanks!

thanks for notes. I'm happy that I seem to have consumed all of my 98 Austrians. Not so happy I consumed all the '97s. :(
