WTN: Impulsive silvaner

by Keith M » Tue May 10, 2011 5:13 pm

Always excited to see silvaner in bocksbeutel from Franken, so when I saw this at K&L in San Francisco, I made an impulse purchase. A nice simple quaffer.

2008 Graf v. Schönborn Hallburger Schlossberg Silvaner Kabinett trocken
Very aromatic nose, melony and green, some sauvignon blanc-like characteristics at first, but these fade, and green melony elements take center stage, tastes salty, green, quite plush but still structured, salty green mango. Nice. Great accompaniment to shaved asparagus pizza with a few dashes of truffle oil. Fun wine.

Sounds good. I assume there was some kind of cheese involved?

I was all set to have pizza with asparagus, mushrooms, and taleggio the other week, to pair with a few bottles of 2009 Schloss Neuweier riesling. But then for a variety of reasons the riesling didn't get opened the same night as the pizza, so I changed the toppings. But soon I am going to go for this match!

Indeed. Fresh mozzarella. Meant to add some shaved reggiano, but forgot. Next time, I'll try some chanterelles on there.

Hi Keith -

Thank you for the interesting note. I like Franken Silvaners, too, but have not had anything from the Schönborn estate in Franken. My experiences with the Rheingau Schönborns have been mixed, though, for whatever it's worth.
