WTN: Great Syrah, dull Zind-Humbrecht

2000 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain
Age isn't doing this many favours. I had liked this a lot more a couple of years ago; it starts out nicely enough with rich apricot and peachy fruit seasoned with honey and smoky elements; VT-like in its sweetness and intensity with a glyceral richness, but with time the alcohol (15%) gets more and more prominent with air and the botrytised elements dominate all other aspects of the wine.

1999 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie
Needs a bit of time to open up but after an hour it's quite spectacular, showing a beautiful perfume of ripe dark fruits, meat, violets and bacon and a combination of power and elegance in the mouth; superb and beautifully balanced although still quite young.

That's some 'syrah'!

I had the 99 Jamet C-R only once, back in 2005. It was mighty impressive then, still with so much succulent fruit of youth, but only hinting at the future. Sounds like it still has a way to go.
