WTN: Pavie Macquin and Osoyoos Larose

by Jenise » Thu May 05, 2011 4:54 pm

We had a tasting group friend over for dinner last night to wish him well with next week's surgery, the last step after chemo and radiation to dispatch his cancer once and for all. Because he once opined to me that, of all wines, an Osoyoos Larose (01 vintage, apparently) was his favorite wine of all time (though that experience has since been eclipsed) and because a few weeks ago a 96 St. Emilion was his favorite (and a personal epiphany for him) at one of our tastings, I chose both an OL and a St. Emilion to serve with dinner last night.

02 Osoyoos Larose, British Columbia: We owned two of these and opened the other not quite a year ago to serve Canadian friends who knew of but had never tasted this wine. That bottle was awful: hard, motor-oily, fruitless, dead. No recognizable flaw but so far from resembling real wine, even a tired one, we had to wonder. Last night's bottle proves that the other one was indeed flawed as it was quite charming. Very obvious Bordeaux-like ambition but as one would be from a warm year, with loamy plum and black cherry fruit and tobacco notes on the mid-palate which carried through to a long finish.

1994 Pavie Macquin, St. Emilion: Though I think my guests preferred the Osoyoos for it's masculinity and fruit, this wine clearly had the edge on femininity and aroma. Generous floral, cherry nose with tea and leathery secondary development. Lean on the palate and a bit clipped on the finish but still rather nice.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Thanks for the note on the Larose, Jenise. After our March visit to Vancouver, I carted home four bottles of the 2007 and am currently patiently waiting.

Well, of course, as soon as I returned home to Ontario, I immeditaely contacted the relevant authorities to ask how much money I could send them in recognition of their having no role at all with this purchase!!

I am much more interested in your opinion of the Pavie Macquin as I have recently acquired a bottle of the 1989 vintage through the generosity of Mr Ross. Also I prefer more refined wines than the ones that come and punch you in the taste buds. 8)
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Unlike my guests, I preferred the Pavie. It was lighter and leaner than the Osoyoos but not in ways I find fault with, especially with the effusively mature Bordeaux nose this displayed. Must add that I have very little experience with this producer and both the others were leaner, lighter years (97 and 88). But they all had that fab nose: I can but imagine how a great vintage like '89 would be showing. You'll be quite happy with it, I think.

I've only had a taste of the 2000 Pavie Macquin but it was appealing enough that I would like to have the opportunity to try other vintages. I think Dale Williams has some experience with them.
