Fairly dark red in the glass.
Smoky, earthy, rich berry fruit on the nose, soon to be replaced with roasted, charred and smoky notes.
Good weight in the mouth, high acidity, cranberry, currants, spicy, tart, very dry, tobacco. The wine quickly changed (for the worse IMHO), losing all its initial fruit and richness, showing a great deal of tartness and intense gooseberry and rhubarb notes.
Tangy and mouthwatering on the finish.
I really don't know what to make of HOP Baco. It usually garners good reviews and, being as patriotic as the next guy, I do try to support the local wine industry, but for the last several vintages I have been disappointed. When I was starting out on my wine journey, I did drink quite a bit of Baco Noir, including that from HOP and I really don't think that I would have continued drinking the grape if it consistently tasted like this. I want to like this wine, but I just can't.
Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).
