WTN: Rheingrafenberg Generator

2001 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spätlese (Germany, Nahe)
After quite a number of disappointing 2001 Hexamers I was finally treated to a bottle that had awakended from prolonged slumber. There's a refreshing brightness to the wine, and the peachy and citrtus-edged fruit is still present. More minerality is showing now than at any time in the past. The wine has great finishing zip as well. Very nice to drink now and over the medium term.

Sounds great.

I opened my last/only 2001 German riesling tonight, the von Hovel OH kabinett. It was racy fun last year and I was hoping that some complexity would develop. Instead, it had fallen apart to my tastes.

So I took the executive decision to open a 2009 Schloss Neuweier Mauer-wein GG and it is very different but mighty fine stuff. Intense and elegant.

Falling apart makes no sense, especially the Hutte. Odd.

Well falling apart might not be the right term. It was dull and without the zip of the previous bottles from last year. It was not very enjoyable. Maybe it's just a stage as the loss of zip will eventually become something creamy, interesting and complex. But I don't have any more bottles to find out.

There's a coincidence - sipping the 2006 of this wine right now - well, the Spätlese* version anyway. Showing early signs of development and very much alive, but needs to be served cold as the acids seem a little low for the palate weight.

cheers

I've had the '06, and it's stuffed with extract and sugar. Trust me, there is plenty of acid, but it's buried, deeply buried.
