WTN: Easter Dinner Cab and recent Pinot

2006 Two Angels Mayacamas Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon - I saw this wine yesterday while browsing through Wine Styles and decided to try it because a) I don't see many wines from this AVA, b) it was an 06 and most Cabs on the shelf around here are 07 and 08, and c) it had a screwcap. I'm glad I got it! This is a nice change from the ocean of over-oaked Cabs - aromas of cassis and blackberries, nicely ripened, tart black and red fruit in the mouth with hints of cedar and leather, drying tannins and a very long finish that echoes all that has gone before. Made a great match with Easter dinner - char-grilled chipotle rubbed ribeye steak, sauteed cabbage and corn on the cob. My daughter didn't have any wine as she had a headache and had to go out later, but she pronounced the dinner amazing (what can I say, I'm a great cook)! Buy more and let it age a few more years.

2006 Argyle Pinot Noir Nuthouse - I really like the Argyle Reserve Pinot Noir (the regular bottling is ok, but not exciting) so when I found a couple bottles of Nuthouse at a special pricing (under $30) I grabbed a couple. This is the second of the two and it was even more disappointing than the first one. The first one was just ok, not anywhere close to what I thought it should be, but this one has so much oak that it was a struggle to find anything resembling Pinot Noir in it. I gave up before finishing the glass, capped the bottle (srewcap) and put it in the fridge. Two days later, not much improvement. Maybe tomorrow I'll decant it and let it have some air, but more than likely it will become disposal cleanser. Only buy again after tasting.
