WTN: Planalto Reserva Branco 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Thu Apr 21, 2011 4:49 pm

DOC Douro
Sogrape

A blend of Gouveio (Verdelho), Malvasia Fina and Viosinho.

Light yellow in the glass.

Spicy, light pear, peppery, grapefruit on the nose.

Light to medium weight, lemon, grapefruit, a hint of orange, juicy, spicy, peppery, bitter citrus rind, refreshing, lightly floral.

The bitter grapefruit rind was quite intense, but seemed to calm down as the bottle warmed.

Mouthwatering, citrus rind on the finish.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

Thanks for the note on this. I've seen this around here for about $8 so I might need to give it a try. In Portuguese whites I tend to prefer Vinho Verdes from the Minho or Bairrada/Dao wines over those from the Douro. Did recently have an '09 Castelo d'Alba Douro branco which was a nice, inexpensive Douro white, but that comes from some higher elevation (e.g. cooler) vineyards in the Alto Douro.

I've seen this, too, in my nearby store. This TN and the $9 price will enable to buy a bottle or 2.
