WTN: Older ESJ

1994 Edmunds St John Zinfandel - The only hint of age (aside from the vintage printed on the label) was the soft and crumbly cork. The color was a deep red, but no hint of bricking, the aroma fresh and lively and the taste - oh my! I could drink Zin like this every day (well, if I could afford it that is). Tart red berries, some floral notes and a hint of baking spices all lead to a clean, lingering finish.

1995 Edumds St John Syrah - This wine was schizo! Tight and unyielding at first, it bounced back and forth between peppery dark fruit and "Eff U - I'm gone", with occasional notes of salt water. In between tantrums there were hints of a nice wine trying to come out to play, but it never quite made it. In a 375. Not sure if this required significant air time or just needs to stay in the bottle a bit longer.

Both from the library release?

My '93 California Syrah (full bottle) had a terribly brittle cork as well.

Yes, both from the library release. This was a great opportunity for me since I didn't get serious about wine until about 8-9 years ago and thus didn't have any older wines in my "cellar" and didn't have the wherewithal to acquire older wines. Wine shops around here charge a steep premium for wines this old - I thought Steve's pricing was very reasonable.

Until this Zinfandel, 11 yrs was the oldest I'd had (another ESJ - 2000 Los Robles Viejo).
