WTN: Bell Cellars "Massa Ranch" Syrah (Yountville)

by Brian K Miller » Mon Apr 18, 2011 2:44 pm

2007 Massa Ranch from immediately south of Yountville proper in a cooler part of the Napa Valley floor.

Very brambly, earthy, meaty, savory, soy. Raspberries. Lightish (14.2% abv) and very fine Northern-Rhonish meatyness. Quite delicious. Contrasts interestingly with their foothills syrah, which is all about blackberry liqueur and big fruit.

Also loved the 2008 Merlot, which was earthy and meaty and savory in tis own right, with a very nice Bordeauxesque quality. A contrast with the Frogs' Leap Merlot, which is more red fruit and higher in acidity.
