WTN: Classic ESJ (1993 California Syrah)

by David M. Bueker » Fri Apr 15, 2011 8:06 am

1993 Edmunds St. John Syrah (California)
There was some adventure getting the cork out of this bottle, so we ended up decanting to get rid of cork bits. I'm actually glad the wine received some air, as it was a touch funky on opening. By the time we got around to dinner, with some home-made burgers it was just singing. There was still youthful fruit in the wine (hard to believe it's 18 years old), but also warm, earthy (clean) aromas, meaty bits (!) and sun-baked herbal elements that mad a complete package that was a perfect burger wine. The balance remained very fine through the meal, and I really wish I had been able to get magnums, as it was gone all too soon.

Steve - any insights on grape sources (Durrell I presume for at least some of it)?

Arrrggghhhhh....A great wine like an EdStJ Syrah w/ a hamburger??? Only a heathen would do something savage like that!! Have you no sense of what is proper & right, David??? :-)
Glad to hear the wine's doing fine. Think mine are all gone. Steve's wines do have a way of going the long haul. Any idea the alcohol on it??

I'll check the alc% on the bottle this evening Tom. There was no heat, that's for sure.

As for the burger - la vache parle!

David; fruit from Durell, also from a small planting in Knight's Valley, a bit from Fenaughty, and some Cinsault from Dry Creek Valley, and a bit of Grenache from Ukiah Valley. Non-Syrah parts made up roughly 15% of the whole. Glad to hear it's showing well; I haven't had it for a while.

Touche, Steve...that was the phraseology I was trying to come up with...and all I could think was "intuition and blind luck"...which didn't work.

Sounds damn good.

I opened one of the 2001 ESJ CA Syrahs a few nights ago which was very, very good, just in need of some more time (after a couple of hours of air it was showing very well). Looking forward to checking into one of my bottles of this soon...
