WTN: Great Macon Village

by MichaelA » Mon Apr 11, 2011 10:57 pm

2008 Domaine Guillot-Broux Macon-Cruzille, "Les Genievrieres",,,,crunchy raw fruit, mouth filling flavors, brisk citrus and mineral....some light oak? Very fresh and satisfying
not your everyday village wine.Perfect compliment to the Sockeye salmon in puff pastry with hollandaise.

There is more and more quality coming out the Mâconnais but it is important to know the names of those who provide it reliably.

Hi Michael -

Thank you for the interesting note. I agree with Tim that there are some really interesting Macon wines out there, though the producer obviously matters; Guillot-Broux is not one that I have tried yet. Still, a top Macon can be a real value versus a comparable quality white from the Côte de Beaune.

BTW, I like the illuminated/medieval-style label.

My current "house white" is the '09 Georges DuBoeuf Macon-Villages. Laugh is you want to, but try the wine first. At under $10 (about $9 by the case) it is a very nice, correct white Burgundy. I have had worse, and many others are not as consistent. Romaneche-Thorins, his base of operations, is only a few miles from Pouilly and Macon and he has worked in the Macon as a young man, consequently he knows the region and the wines and it is no surprise that his generic Macon-Village is as tasty as it is. From there I go up to Chablis for William Fevre's current release, the '09 Champs Royaux Chablis, another favorite. Then I keep a case of the '08 Laflaive Les Setilles Bourgogne for something more formal. These three seem to cover the bases nicely. Don't poh-poh the DuBoeuf until you've tried it.
