The subject line says it all. Most of you know that I am in the retail business, not a financial part, but a wine consultant to order wines and to sell wines.
When I took this job on several years ago, there was a big hole in the French selections. They had some of the standards, some very nice and some I thought were not worth the price.
Since I've been there, I made sure we have a least 1 bottle of each of the first growths. Not sure if we have the clients to purchase those, but I wanted to have them. Currently, in the Bordeaux, Medoc,Haut-Medoc section, we have price points from $11 up to $75. But honestly, with the exception of a few, none of them are in the 1855 classification. Since we don't have a big clientele for some of the nicer French wines, I still wanted to bring in at least 3 from each major area. I was looking at the $25 and $80 ranges, the owner would like to see $25, $40 and $60. I have found a number of wines, that I would like to bring in, probably not by the case but a few bottles. I am stumped with some good wines from Margaux. I am looking at some Brane Cantenac and Château Rausan-Ségla.
The case prices for 2005,2006,2008 (averaging) is about $850. So that would mean about $70/bottle and a retail value of about $94. That sort of puts us out of the range.
So, my question, if I can ask, are there some other wines from Margaux that we could look at that would not be so steep in price? I am doing ok for the other major appellations, but for Margaux, it seems to be harder to come up with something.
Again, let me apologize in advance if this is asking something beyond what the scope is for this site. In the very short time I have been here online, I have been totally floored by the expertise and knowledge of the members here. I know I can handle myself in any retail environment and/or social one, but here, I am like a babe in the woods.
