Woohoo! Maybe now there will be some Lafite for the rest of us . . . . oh wait, we can't afford it anyway. :(

Considering that the Chinese are now developing vineyards and constructing wineries that will be capable of putting several billion (yes, billion) bottles of wine on the market annually in the not-too-distant future, that' the best April fool's joke I've seen yet.

Sam this is a running gag with Ryan. As you have been vouched for by the highest authorities, please consider yourself exempt from all Midwestern jokes despite the fact you live in Indiana. I don't consider Chicago to be in the Midwest, culturally speaking.

A few years ago I went to supposedly the best restaurant in ST Charles which is a fairly short distance west of Chicago and a very upscale sort of town. Fly over never stop to eat there is all I can say. :( :(

Chicago is an oasis, not a Mecca. Of course I am skeptical of anything west of the Appalachains! :?

Lou, Lou, Lou. Do you travel to American Canyon or Vacaville for your dinners out? St. Charles is a remote suburb of Chicago, nothing more. If you want a great meal, go to Chicago instead

Indeed, what do we even need the American West for? It certainly wasn't the original American Dream for millions of pioneers and immigrants, nor did our westward expansion "from sea to shinning sea" define part of our national identity, nor has our nation ever benefitted from the wheat and corn grown on the "fruited planes," nor are the natural resources which built this nation located almost entirely west of Appalachains, nor is the generalized standard for American English defined by linguists to be represented by the Midwest. No indeed, in fact perhaps it would have been better if we had let the Spanish and the French keep the western three quarters of the country . . . . clearly was more trouble than it's been worth.

Let me try to clarify my post for a sophisticate from Indiana. St Charles is truly a suburb of Chicago, but a very affluent one and usually with the presence of money one is able to find good restaurants. Now I didn't expect the French Laundry but the restaurant we attended the food was on a par with The Olive Garden. Now my teen age grandaughter now insists on going to one of the many decent restaurants here in the valley. She at the age of fourteen has informed me that no more crap like they serve at the Olive Garden. Have you noticed Mark that women get more expensive as they get older.

Lou,
I have noticed some men have the same inflationary tendency, especially when it comes to their toys.

St. Charles began polishing up their dowtown some years ago. Along with the other upgrades they added some upscale restaurants. We have eaten at an Italian restaurant on the river in St. Charles which served relatively non-descript food. I don't recall the name, but the locals raved about it. Perhaps that is where you ate Lou. I can't imagine a destination restaurant being located in St. Charles.

I do agree with Mark that there is some excellent dining in Chicago proper. On the rare occasions that they have let me out of Indiana I have dined at some well respected restaurants on the coasts. In terms of quality of food, wine and service I would rate Charlie Trotter's and Spiaggia in Chicago up there with the best in the country. Plus, unlike the famous Yountville eatery where you will spend $900 for lunch you will be able to enjoy dinner for two at either Chicago spot for under $600, depending on wine selection of course.

Definitely worth a try if you happen to venture out into fly-over country again, Lou.
