Beaujolais Question

by Jim Grow » Thu Apr 07, 2011 11:36 am

I know very little about Beaujolais, mostly what Georges Duboeuf sends to the U.S. but couldn't pass up a few bottles of this producer. Jungle Jims near Cincinnati had 2007 Henry Fessy Regnie on discount for $6.50. I have not tried any yet but was wondering if these bottles are or soon will be in decline. The search engine shows nothing for the Regnie sub-region.

No real help, never heard of Fessy. But I like the 2007 vintage in Beaujolais a lot. Regnie tends to be on lighter side of the Crus, based on my limited experience. Florida Jim, Rahsaan, or someone might have better info.

I believe I had this wine in an in-store tasting but I'm not a huge fan of Beaujolais (have not purchased a single bottle in 25 years) and I'm not 100% certain on the vintage but I remember it to be very light, floral and showing simple raspberry fruit. That's a good price but I would not back up the truck. Buy one and try it.

Henry Fessy is based in Brouilly (and is now owned by Louis Latour) but curiously Florida Jim has published notes on a Cotes de Provence Rosé and a VdP d'Oc Chardonnay bottled under this label, so it may have a negociant arm. Regardless, I haven't tried their wines but, like Dale, like what I've had from '07 a lot.

I've had the Fessy Fluerie, Brouilly, and Moulin-à-Vent, all of which are available around here in the $10-15 zone. The Brouilly is the only one I cottoned to. In the end they're all ok but there is much better Cru Beaujolais out there for just a little bit more $. Now for $6.50 that's not a bad deal, though I've not had the Regnie specifically. I'm not expert but I don't get the feeling that any of these have long shelf life, cru or no but your '07 is probably ok. I did have an '08 Brouilly a couple of weeks back and it was fine.
