It's time for the lightening round.
I don't quite have time to craft careful, studious, and insightful tasting notes but I'll not let that stop me. Last Friday I whipped up some grub for the lads as we uncorked some vino we'd been curious about. The proceeding started with a random bottle of Prosecco that I've forgotten the name of and I'd never added it to my cellar. It was wet and off dry and bubbly. There go out and buy some or not. The sauteed chicken (garlic, cayenne, salt, pepper, thyme, cumin) with rice & gravy and steamed broccoli were duly presented and we tucked into:
2001 Trimbach Rielsing CFE which I comment on above in this month's topic section.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=38369&p=319154#p319154After which we unleashed:
2007 Georg Mosbacher Riesling Forster Ungeheuer Auslese. This wine goes BOOM! This if the first Pfalz wine I'm aware of sampling. I was a bit worried about drinking something of this level ripeness with regular ol' grub, but it worked a treat, certainly since my
pollo was a bit spicy. Rich golden color, nose of honey, apples, warm cotton sheets, fall breezes, and a mother's love. Well it was a really cozy and comforting wine. The anti CFE (granted it's not an apples to apples comparison in spite of the grape). In no way cloying, the sweetness/fruitiness was kept in check by a very accommodating, well groomed, and quiet acidity. Great length is what I believe I should say here about the length, which was in fact great...er..long. The sole fault is that this only comes in the 500ml size, though my preferred 500l size for this wine is probably not a realistic option. I will be delving into some deep Mosbacher research forthwith.
Not the same night but in a Riesling vein, my wife bought me a bottle of
Loosen's 2009 Dr. L Riesling. I thanked her and gave her that condescending "oh honey that's so nice that you brought me this bottle of wine even though I've been turning up my nose at it because it's just a QbA thing that's on grocery stores shelves everywhere". Not unlike Jenise's "zinfandel" post
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=38109 and like that it turned out to be a much better wine than I would have ever thought. Full of fruit, a wee hint of sweetness, and a crisp acidity. A bit apple-y, in a good way. Very refreshing. Maybe not profound but certainly anything but dumb. At the price I see this for, ridiculous value. Hello Porch Wine Summer 2011! And to me Porch Wine is not a slight, it takes some doing to be offered a spot on my stoop.
