WTN: Four Dog Night...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:38 am

Tried this foursome last night as I baked a cake & assembled my pizza. Not a good night, winewise:
1. Tatomer Riesling Kick-on Ranch/SBC (13.9%; 180 cs) Lompoc 2008: Med.light gold color; pleasant pineapply/R slight mineral/valve oil rather interesting nose some like Rheinpfalz R; slightly tart fairly dry lean weak mineral/pineapple/perfumed talc rather simple/weak flavor; very short weak/watery slight mineral/earthy little fruit finish; pleasant enough interesting slightly Germanic R nose but pretty washed out/watery almost nothing on the palate; way overpriced at $30.00

2. GerardMetz Riesling AC: Alsace (12%; MeBalP) Producer-Vigneron: CasmirMetz/Itterswille 2005: Light yellow color; lovely R/floral some earthy/mineral/petrol some spicy/perfumed talc attractive nose; tart/lean somewhat thin/weak/watery slight floral/mineral/petrol light fruit dry flavor; very short weak/watery/thin slight floral/petrol finish; rather nice nose but delivers almost zip on the palate; not even worth the $14.00

3. Margerum PinotGris Klickitat/American WW (#13791 of 18500) 2009: Pale yellow near colorless; very light simple/earthy/floral/unbuttered popcorn/cream cheese slight perfumed talc/carnations nose; bit spritzy weak/light/watery unbuttered popcorn/floral/carnations/ribbon candy very little flavor; very short/almost none weak/thin candied/ribbon candy/floral/unbutterd popcorn watery finish; rather a dull wine; an Oakland wine...there's no there/there. $17.00

4. Malagon El Grenache Valle de Guadalupe (55 yr old vines; 13.3%) 2008: Light slightly brown color; slight strawberry/Grenache rather earthy some hot-climate/Moroccan/unclean rather Am.oak somewhat interesting nose; soft/flat slight oxidized some hot-climate/unclean/brett very light strawberry/Grenache rustic flavor w/ little tannins; med.short light strawberry/Grenache slight oxidized/rustic/unclean/earthy finish w/ no tannins; speaks of hot-climate and Grenache but nothing to write home about; not worth the $20.00

A wee BP:
1. A pretty dull night winewise. Man...did my stash of Carlisles look enticing sitting there, but decided to bag it for the night.
