German QBA and QMP question?

by Jim Grow » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:29 pm

I was scrolling thru the German wine offerings on-line at Calvert Woodley today for an impending trip to D.C. I quickly see many German QBA wines that are more expensive than even Spatlese or Auslese wines. I grew up thinking QBA wines were inferior to Qualitatswein Mit Pradikat wines. Times have changed and I have not I guess. I understand the use of * (i.e. Auslese***) as designating an especially superior bottling and so to for gold capsule and long gold capsule but most/all of the wines in question are not labeled that way. Could someone give me a short refresher on the new terminology in German wine labels. Is it still possible to buy nice Kabinett quality wines for $15 or less?

What wines are you talking about? I don't see "many" QbAs at all on the CW website and the only one that is slightly expensive is Donnhoff at $20. But there's always a Donnhoff premium.

Hi Rahsaan, you are right that there are not as many examples as I thought but the second listing alphabetically was what got me to wondering plus notes by David in TWA and examples seen in wine shops. That listing in CW was the 2008 A.J. Adams Riesling Dhroner Mosel for $34!! For me that is an expensive experiment to find out if this is a table wine or dessert wine or something in between. I usually assume that if there is no designation of Kabinett/Spatlese/Auslese etc. that the wine is a QBA. I have had some wonderful QBA wines (Burklin-Wolfe 2003 Riesling Giesbol {sp.} ) but that was a shot in the dark that turned out to be great. The more info. on a wine label, the happier I am and more able to make an informed buying decision.

Adam is an expensive producer across the pradikats. I believe he has even smaller production than usual for the Mosel.

That Adam wine is not a "mere QbA" by the way. He makes what he considers to be a top flight dry/dry-ish wine that (justifiably IMO) sells for a premium price over garden variety QbA.

Don't most of the ultra prestigious and often expensive dry(ish) GGs, etc. sponsored by the VDP organisation http://www.vdp.de/en/vdp-praedikat-wine-estates/ come with a QbA back label?
