WTN: 2009 Edmunds St. John Syrah Wylie Vineyard

by David M. Bueker » Sun Mar 27, 2011 10:54 am

Wylie is doing a solo album this time, and it's a damn fine performance. Dark, pure syrah fruit is what tis wine is all about. When I say dark, I do not mean jammy or over-extracted, but rather deep, brooding fruit that does not give its essence quickly or easily. With essentially no makeup, this is a window to the soul of the grape and the site. It's going to be hard to not drink this all up soon, but I believe great things are in store for the future.

Steve - how old are these vines now?

planted in '96. Future may not be so bright for this vineyard, at least for us. The owner has been extremely difficult to work with, and my vineyard guy in the foothills (who's not difficult to work with, by any stretch of the imagination) is fed up with her. And it would appear that no one in his or her right mind would want to work with her, so I'm not sure what will become of the place.

That's too bad. I hope there's still a vintage or two to go. Things OK with Fenaughty?

Steve,

What is the MSRP for the 2009 Wylie? and, does Vintner Select have any of it? Thanks.

I guess I need to clear cache then David. I just looked at the ESJ website and there was nothing newer that the 2008 B-J noir. Ok, now I cleared my bookmark and Googled, and still get the same web site. The gamay(s) noir are both 2008 and there is nothing newer there. I have cleared cache and history. Not sure there is anything left except to go out of FireFox and use IE to see if that is different. Thanks for the comeback

Bob; alas, I'm getting behind on my site updating. Current Bone-Jolly is '09, The Wylie is, as David mentioned, $28 (from me). The newsletter is current.
best,
Steve

Thanks Steve, I will of course need at least a few bottles of the 2009. Will check with VS Monday as to availability. Thanks again.

David, after re-reading your posts on the 09 Wylie, I am thinking that it might be better to wait until late winter to even try one. Just reading between the lines, but it sounds as if this, like the 05 Bassetti, could be a 20 year wine. At my age, not sure I can afford to wait that long.

While I am as sure as I can be that the Wylie can go that long, it is not as structured as the Bassetti, so it is much more approachable. I don't think waiting to next winter is going to change the wine in any meaningful way. If you have a cool day and some grilled meat I would say go for it.

Lou, either you are a more trusting soul than me, or you, just have more room in you cellar in case you expire before you drink it all up. In my case, I fear it will be emptied down the drain, and MAN, I sure hope that is not the case! I mean, can you evewn imagine pouring the 2005 Bassetti down the drain and it wasn't even corked?

Repeat after me: There is no harm in drinking a wine in its youth. There is no harm in drinking a wine in its youth.

(I mean, it's not like we're talking '06 Barolos here)

Opened a bottle of the 09 Wylie last night. Dark, brooding and savoury - much as David described. Structured but still very enjoyable, even more enjoyable and more accessible a night later. Still keeping a glass or 2 in the bottle to see what it turns into by tomorrow. But it's already compelling and a wonderful wine that I am glad to have in the cellar.

You've inspired me with your approach, but I'll have to drink the rest of my 01 Bassetti first. :D

Glad to hear this, as I just got a couple of these from Steve, with some assorted other older wines.
