WTN: au revoir

by Mark S » Sat Mar 26, 2011 10:55 pm

Popping the cork, and they are gone:

Domaine de Montille, Beaune, 'les Greves', 2006
Translucent strawberry-cranberry red color. Forest floor on the nose, no overt fruit. A bit simple, if elegant, with old cherry fruit, leather, chalk finish and wood dust fannings on the end. Not a lot of depth here, but alright nonetheless. B/B+

Dedicato a Marianna, Taurasi Riserva, 2001
Stinky bleu-green cheese aromas upon opening. This is tough as nails to drink, high acidity and sharp tannins, but there is also volcanic minerals and cherry-pomegranate-cranberry for fruit. Clearly needs a dark dank cellar to foment. B+(for potential)

Chateau Sociando-Mallet, Haut Medoc, 1986
Like the bachelor uncle who comes for dinner every holiday, this wine never gets old and perpetually stays young. After 25 years in bottle, you would think there would be some evolution taking place, but there really isn't behind it's wall of unrelenting structure. Sure, there's a few fruit's, mostly red & black currants and handfuls of glacial gravel, but this is a beast and still really a baby.

Chateau Monbousquet, Bordeaux (blanc), 199
I enjoy old white Bordeaux. They seem to age gracefully, only turning old when you catch them unawares like when they are taking out their dentures, or breathing hard walking up a slight incline. This is in a nice plateau right now, turning amber, slightly, there is a nice panoply on the nose of pineapple, mushroom log, and greengage plum. The palate surprises with pineapple-orange ice cream, Juicy Fruit gum, buttered biscuits, and a chalky finish. Good, and sadly my last bottle. A-

I've got one of these (Sociando Mallets) left. I really am trying to wait. I like it, and think it more expressive than you note at least from my cellar, but it is still tannic and a bit stern. Half bottles drink great, though!

You really enjoy old white Bordeaux! I've never had a 1812 year old wine!

Good catch, Dale! I tried to correct, but I'm getting an SQL-error...

Hi James! Didn't know there was an offline then, would love to but probably still recovering from Easter then.
Where are you having it at?

MArk, actual offline is at Bob Ross's in Franklin Lakes, a little closer to you. Would love to have you if it worked. It's been years!

I tried to correct my bad quote, and had same issue with edits. So what year was it?

In general I tend to avoid white Bordeaux from Medoc and Libournais, but this sounds nice.

Our system runs a clean up on Tuesday mornings and often/usually, threads that had embedded SQL errors are returned to health. Seems to be the case with this thread.

So, what year was that Monbousquet?

Hi Mark -

Thank you for the notes. Hope you are doing well.

I am actually surprised that you liked the Monbousquet Blanc - the 1999 that I had a year ago was still very heavy on the oak. Anyway, I thought that the 2000 Monbousquet rouge was much better.

My impression is that the de Montille wines need a lot of time.
