1961 Drouhin Laroze Gevrey Chambertin

by Ronald Johnson » Thu Mar 24, 2011 5:16 pm

I just purchased a bottle of this for a friend's 50th birthday (couldn't afford a couple of grand for a bordeaux from that vintage). I suspect it's over the hill, and bought it mainly as a commemorative bottle, but was wondering if anybody out there might be familiar with the wine and specifically this particular vintage. Tried to find some tasting notes on the web with not much luck.

No real info. Drouhin-Laroze is generally fairly solid, and I think based in Gevrey. That said, 50 years is a long time for village Gevrey. What is condition like- ullage, any seepage, etc? In any case it'll be interesting to open- very generous of you to get for your friend. Hope you report back!

Another option -cheaper than Bdx - for those looking for '61 birthyear wines might be Piedmont. No guarantees, but while trophy wines are expensive, sometimes there are great bottles from less known producers (or appellations_

Thanks, Dale, for your kind and informative reply. Don't see any obvious seepage around the capsule, ullage looks like mid to upper mid shoulder. Knowing my friend and his wife (also turning 50 this year) they'll insist on sharing it with my wife and me, so I'll definitely post some tasting notes then! thanks again, Ron Johnson
