WTN: 2009 Chidaine + Burgaud Tasting

by Andrew Bair » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:48 pm

March 19, 2011 – Chidaine/Burgaud Tasting, Vintages, Belmont, MA
Thanks to Vintages for pouring these exciting wines last Friday. I have enjoyed both of these producers' wines in recent years, and this was the first time that I had tried any of their 2009s yet. Definitely a nice group here.

2009 François Chidaine Vouvray Les Argiles
Medium-bodied, dry, lightly round, well balanced; transparently mineral, with tropical and citrus fruit notes. Very good+. $22.

2009 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos du Breuil
Moderately full-bodied, bone dry, somewhat broad on the palate, well balanced, with good underlying acidity. Quite mineral, with apricot, apple, red plum, and lightly nutty notes. Very good/excellent. $22.

2009 Domaine Jean-Marc Morgon Les Charmes
Medium-bodied, lightly meaty, well balanced, with notes of dark berries, licorice, earth, and spices. Very good. $15.

2009 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte du Py Vieilles Vignes
Medium-bodied, nicely balanced, and silky; a bit more tightly structured than Les Charmes. Mineral and lightly meaty, with cherry, plum, and tar notes. Very good+. $17.

2009 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte du Py “James”
This cuvée is aged in used barriques. Medium-bodied, well balanced, spicy, and gamy, with berry and black cherry flavors, plus just a touch of vanilla from the oak. $30.

"James" is quite the unexpected name for a French wine. Any idea where it comes from? (Nothing on the Burgaud website).

Rahsaan -

Apparently, it is named for James Bond - specifically, when the Bond Girl du jour exclaims, "Oh, James".

Thanks! That was also unexpected. (I imagined it had something based on a trip/personal connection to an Anglophone country).

Will see if the wine can live up to the emotion.

Chidaine is just so phenomenal for the price. What a treat.
