2001 Strub Riesling Niersteiner Paterberg Spatlese
I've been a fan of Strub's 2001s all along, and stashed away a fair amount. In my tastings, no vintage since has come close to these 2001s at Weingut Strub. This spatlese is going strong, with a sweet nose of ripe golden delicious apples and some honey, but the bouquet is a little shy overall. To taste, it's a bit straight-forward and simple, but it is highly mouthwatering with big acids matching plenty of lush fruit. Good puckering length. This is a good, solid riesling whose charm is mainly in its terrific zest. Seems perhaps mid-way on its maturity arc. I'm enjoying this and the $14 I paid once upon a time. 90-91 pts, with upside if any more complexity develops.

thanks For notes, Patrick. I had my last of these in 2007:
2001 Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Spatlese (Rheinhessen)
I bought several different 2001 Strubs, (mostly Kabinetts around $10!) and all now gone according to Cellartracker. Broad red apple fruit cut with lime/grapefruit, a rather creamy texture despite the good acidity. There'sa lot of sugar here.On day 2 the lime is more evident, along with an nice green herbal note (just a hint). Nice wine. B/B+

Guess I should have held longer. I agree that vintages since were far less appealing. 2001 is probably my fave vintage anyway, but the difference is even more apparent with Strub than most.

Hi Dale: this bottle was missing some of the steely notes I got on bottles of Strub's 2001 Kabinetts, and given that it still seemed fairly thick-sweet with almost no aromatic development (and still very pale in color), my guess is it will go for a while still. I dunno if it will get more complex though, but I'm guessing yes. Nice wine overall.

I've got heaps of 2001 Germans-- a vintage horizontal off-line would be fun...

I've got a little stash of 2001 Strub myself. Haven't gotten into the Spatlese yet. Thanks for the note.
