WTN: 1995 Château Haut-Brion

by Rainer from CH » Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:40 pm

1995 Château Haut-Brion - sometimes Bordeaux really delivers ..

We (some crazy colleagues of mine and me as their opinion-maker) couldn't resist picking this (2 bottles actually ;-)) from a restaurant's wine list given its attractive price (below USD 350).
I've rarely seen an fairly affordable Bordeaux Premier really living up to my lofty expectations, but this one really delivered (although being in a closed phase).
Decanted for about one hour. Deep purple with a dark core. Closed, reductive nose as expected, revealing only a fraction of the luscious thunderstorm this powerhouse unleashes on the palate: it explodes with tobacco, smoke, almonds, truffles, sweet red fruits, caramel, minerals, crushed rock, spice, and cigar box aromatics. There is loads of awesome, highly aromatic tannin combined with precise, fresh acidity and fruit, great concentration and admirable balance. The finish is over a minute in length. - My personel rating: 18.5+/20.

Cheers,
Rainer

Wow. Unbelievable price. Below retail. Would they allow you to buy a few bottles "to go"?

They wouldn't since they have only 2 bottles left. No problem to me: I'll just go there again ;-)

Hurry lest I get there before you do. :)

I've always enjoyed the Haut-Brion's. I think mainly because there are (to me) a lot different than the other French Bourdeaux's Remembering my teacher, and I still use this today, the soil from Graves, the limestone/shale/sand produce a mineral like taste that is so unique. That price sounds so unbelievable. Would have loved to pick up a few more bottles
