WTN: Bogle Phantom

by Ron DiLauro » Mon Mar 21, 2011 1:27 pm

We carry almost all of the Bogle wines, they are reasonably priced and each one of them produces a nice round wine, nothing fantastic, but nothing disappointing also.
However, there is one BIG exception. That is their Phantom. I have tasted this wine in several different vintages and they are all GOOD.

It is a blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Mourvedre. , old and new vine. Its a deep rich purple with a great nose. The wine is about as full as I would expect for any table wine.
Its rich, a bit spicy and so very soft. For under $20, I have found this to be one super wine.

Not a buy of Bogle for the reasons you mention, but at parties where lots of people bring new world inexpensive wines like a lot of the parties in my neighborhood, I'll pick the Bogle out of the lineup over the Rex Goliaths and Smoking Loons every time. And the Phantom is definitely their best wine.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I went through a big Bogle Merlot buying spree a few years ago when it was at a Virginia Costco fo $6. I haven't had Bogle for years but this weekend, I ran across a bottle of the Bogle Phantom in my basement. I do not recall buying it and it is not in my written inventory. Your review is very timely; I'll drink it soon and toast the late Mrs. Bogle.
