WTN: Speaking of ESJ

by Doug Surplus » Fri Mar 11, 2011 5:15 pm

2001 Edmunds St John Rocks and Gravel I decided to open a bottle of this last night to wash down some roast chicken. I am sure glad I did. I don't think I can adequately describe the aromas and tastes, except to say it was nearly perfect. Flowers, perfume, red fruit, just enough tartness and a wonderful berry finish. It was great with food and great after dinner as well. Except for a few drops lapped up by the chihuahua (she's a lush by the way) I finished the bottle by myself.

This is such a change from my last encounter with this wine (about 2 years back) where the wine was so muted I couldn't tell if it was just hiding or on the downhill slide. Well, now I know - it was just playing hard to get.

Great news for me, as I ordered three of these from Steve's library stash.

Hard to go wrong with waiting for it to play more nicely. Sounds great.

I still remember being amazed by an older R&G (don't remember the vintage any more) that Arvind Rao brought to a dinner at Afghan Kebab many years ago. That was when I realized that I did Steve's southern rhone style blends a disservice by not letting them age.

I somehow kept my hands off one bottle of 2007 TOBM (and don't think it wasn't hard) to see what happens to it in 9 or 10 years.

I've only saved two bottles Jay. Willpower was irrelevant with that wine.

Maybe.
But the 2009 R&G last night was very fine, indeed.
Waiting may not be in my best interests.
Best, Jim
