2008 Mugnier Clos de la Maréchale
Elegant pale and crisp. At times hinting towards fervent vigorous fruit. It’s all very nice but the tannins come on more and more while drinking which makes me think now is not the time to explore this further. Although I know others have enjoyed this a lot recently. Perhaps they just drank more quickly!
1988 Jean Chauvenet Les Vaucrains
Rusty old wine. Nowhere near as meaty or as NSG as a bottle from a few months ago. With air it settles into a groove and takes on a not-quite-silky integrated texture that one can enjoy. But you have to look. It’s not hitting you over the head with anything.
2002 Jean Chauvenet Les Bousselots
This needs a lot of air to get going and for the first few hours it is tough and tannic. But after many hours it shows lovely layered ripe fruit, NSG dark iron undercurrents, floral top notes, and in general a lot to like. In an ideal world I would follow some bottles of this over time.
2002 Jean Chauvenet Les Damodes
Much lighter and quicker to show its goods than the 02 Bousselots. But the goods that it showed me were not as appealing. Minty, lightweight, simple. That’s all I found.
1995 Faiveley Les Damodes
Dark tannic and tough. After six or seven hours the wine begins to ever-so-slowly peak out from behind the burl. But this is really inscrutable. Wiser folks could probably have predicted that ahead of time.
2002 Grivot Les Roncières
Suave and supple but the fruit shows on the thin side and there is an unmistakable pungent clove-beet note that I’ve gotten from previous Grivot Roncières and which I am still not sure if I enjoy. I’m guessing this needs to develop further but I couldn’t tell you how that will go.
