Which Chianti

by Hilton Meyer » Mon Feb 28, 2011 2:34 pm

Well i went into the wine shop today and found some reasonably priced wines that may fir the budget, now what I'd like to know is which of them may be worth the outlay:

Castellani Chianti 2009
Baron Ricasoli Chianti Classico 2007 - Searching the forums for this one led to the previous year being a bit flat, so not too sure what to make of it
Ruffino Chianti
Piccini Chianti Reserva 2006 -- I went searching thorugh the forum and found a hint that the magnum bottle was a bit eh!!
Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Reserva 2005 - Seems Rogov found this to be quite palatable and at the moment leaning towards it
Sant Antinio Pinot Grigio 2009
Sasso Al Poggio Toscana 2005
La Breccesca Vino nobile Di Montepulciano 2005

Then i saw some rather cheap Labrussco sparkler's that I am not so worried about the price but rather the headache that may follow. Are they worth the chance just for the fun of it.

I don't have direct experience with most of these so if you get a response from another forum member who has sampled them, disregard my response. I would be inclined to trust in the Antinori Chianti Classico Reserva. I also find that sometimes I like a Chianti better the second day after opening it (recork and refrigerate overnight and then let it sit at room temperature for awhile before drinking on the second day.) They are sometimes more mellow the second day if a bit harsh or tannic the first day. Pinot Grigio is a white wine (not one of my favorite varieties of grape) so a totally different purchase.

Did not care for the Sasso wine myself-sweet, one dimensional cherry fruit which did not say "Chianti" to me. Ruffino is OK, middle of the road stuff...not exciting but decent.

The last three are not Chianties as I'm sure you know. Would go with either the Ruffino or the Antinori as they are the ones we have enjoyed.

I'm leaning towards the Antinori but i will see what other feedback I get.
Sorry about the misleading subject, the last three are not Chianti so if you have drunk any of them then please let me know whether they are any good
