1998 Domaine Marcel Deiss Burg
60% Riesling/40% Gewürztraminer. Nose of caramel, sage, and baking spices. Full-bodied, dry, but not completely bone dry (think Brut Champagne); focused and well balanced, with good underlying acidity and some fading tannins. Very mineral, with earthy, roasted herbal (sage, rosemary, marjoram, and mixed peppercorns), tea, and honeyed notes. There is some light apple/pear fruit in the background, but the focus is clearly on the mineral/earth-driven aromatics. Nice earthy/herbal/minty/mineral finish. Excellent; another superb field blend from Jean-Michel Deiss.
2001 Domaine Bott-Geyl Pinot Gris Grand Cru Sonnenglanz Vendanges Tardives
From 500 ml bottle. Floral nose. Full, fat, lightly to moderately viscous, with good underlying acidity. Moderately sweet, with flavors of pears, peaches, honey, cashews, and caramel; subtly metallic/earthy. Delicious, and in a nice place right now.
